Guinness Records Says World’s Oldest Person, Maria Branyas Morera Dies At Age 117

 The world's oldest person identified as Maria Branyas Morera has been confirmed dead at the age of 117.

Maria’s death was announced in Tuesday in a short statement issued by Guinness World Records, saying the deceased was confirmed dead on Monday.

The statement reads: “Guinness World Records is saddened to learn that the world’s oldest person, Maria Branyas Morera (USA/Spain), passed away yesterday, 19 August. Her death was confirmed by the Gerontology Research Group.

“Aged 117 years 168 days, she was the eighth-oldest person (with a verifiable age) in history.

“Maria passed away peacefully at the nursing home in Catalonia, Spain, where she resided for the past two decades.”

A post shared on Ms Branyas's account on X reads: "Maria Branyas has left us. She has gone the way she wanted: in her sleep, at peace, and without pain."

"I don't know when, but very soon this long journey will come to an end.

"Death will find me worn down from having lived so much, but I want to meet it with a smile, feeling free and satisfied."

The Gerontology Research Group, which validated details of people thought to be 110 or older, listed Ms Branyas as the oldest known person in the world after the death of French nun Lucile Randon last year.

Ms Branyas was born in San Francisco on 4 March 1907, before her family returned to Spain when she was young.

She lived in a nursing home, where she resided for 23 years, in the Catalan town of Olot at the time of her death.
